Try This at Home

“Working with Types & Symbols on branding our book felt like securing the services of the world’s finest interior designer. They held the beautiful tension between consulting our preferences and offering professional insight. The only disappointment was that we had to choose between the options they gave us, all of which were gorgeous and clever. What a bunch of geniuses.”

The Opportunity

David and Jennifer met nearly a quarter century ago when Jennifer was asked by a youth magazine to write about Adventism’s hot new evangelist. Since then they’ve worked on several projects together, staying in touch as friends. When David returned in 2021 from seven years in Australia, they decided to dedicate their collaborative efforts to healing, helping, and honing families. Thus Try This at Home was born.

When David and Jennifer reached out to us about designing the book and in-person workshop series, they wanted to create refreshing resource that presented timeless principles, grounded in scripture, and proven to work.

The Brand

The first step was to define a brand identity for the series. This wasn’t just a book, but a brand that will expand in scope over time. It needed a clean and iconic brand that would give them the flexibility to keep building resources.

Part of establishing the brand was to define a mono-line illustration style with half-tone shading that is both simple and references instruction manuals. For the covers, we drew a house with subtle details that tell the story of phases of life and family relationships. To subtly reflect the changes that happen throughout life, the tree will grow (dating), bloom (marriage), fruit (sex), grow saplings (family), and lose its leaves (aging and death). The people in the house also change over the course of the series.

The Book

Because this is a workbook, we wanted the physical books to be highly functional and beautiful.

The book is bound using a method called Swiss Binding. This clever alternative to traditional binding doesn’t adhere the cover to the spine which allows the workbooks to open flat for ease of use.

And because each of the pages are sewn in, you never have to worry about one falling out.

Original illustrations, created by our own Creative Director, Brett Meliti, introduce each chapter with imagery that provides a thoughtful visual entry point into the themes that follow and invite deeper reflection.

We included a wide margin with a dot grid on the right hand side of every page for callouts, references, and easy note taking. You’ll also find illustrations of David and Jennifer throughout the book to indicate who's being referenced in the text.

Altogether, the result is a thoughtful, approachable resource designed to feel as natural and practical in everyday life as the conversations it’s meant to spark.
