Overview

Jesus is the Light and Life. Steps to Christ, Thoughts from the Mount of Blessing, and Christ’s Object Lessons are all about starting or deepening your relationship with Him.

Design Details

As a creative studio we care about the small things because we understand the final result is simply the sum of all the decisions we made along the way. Keep reading to learn about some of our favorite design details within the Light and Life Collection.

Cover Material

Did you know two of the three books within the Light and Life Collection (Christ’s Object Lessons and Thoughts from the Mount of Blessing) were originally written as part of The Desire of Ages? Because of this, we decided to use the same cover material on these books that is used on The Desire of Ages.

Cover Artwork

The artwork on the cover for each book is composed of twelve lines. Twelve because these books are all about getting to know Jesus and becoming one of His modern day disciples. Lines, because we’re all on our own journey.

The lines are positioned on the cover to illustrate the title of each book:

  • Horizontal lines that look like steps for Steps to Christ.
  • Diagonal lines that look like a mountain for Thoughts from the Mount of Blessing.
  • Vertical lines that reference nature/growth for Christ’s Object Lessons (because most of the parables of Jesus are based in nature).

Gilded Page Edges

The page edges for each book within the set are gilded in holographic foil.

This foil is unique from traditional foils (like gold or silver) because it reflects the full spectrum of light.

We love this detail, because it reminds us of God’s glory which is described as a rainbow in Ezekiel 1:27, 28.

Slipcase

The slipcase for the Light and Life Collection will protect your books and look great doing it.

The line work is a composite of the cover artwork from each book, and was applied using holographic foil.

Typography & Paper

When it comes to book design, a really great typeface is one you don’t even notice. Your eyes glide across the page effortlessly moving from letter to letter, word to word, and line to line. This might sound simple, but designing a typeface that does all those things well is extremely difficult. After extensive exploration we decided to use Pensum Pro, a beautiful, highly readable font family designed by TypeMates, a foundry located in Germany.

The paper used on the interior of the Light and Life Collection is made by Salzer. Ink sits beautifully on the page, it’s acid-free, chlorine-free, non-yellowing, has a high opacity, and best of all it’s entirely wood-free. This is a premium paper made specifically for books, and we think you’re going to love it as much as we do.

Dual Page Numbering

We created a dual-page numbering system to make sure it was easy to cite or lookup a specific passage, while not negatively impacting the design of the page.

Smyth Sewn Binding

We used Smyth Sewn binding for the Light and Life Collection, which is the highest quality binding technique available. Each page is physically sewn in, resulting in a book that will stand up to heavy use over many years. Smyth Sewn books are also a pleasure to read from because they open flat making it easy for reading, highlighting, or jotting your notes in the margin.

Steps to Christ, Special Editions

Steps to Christ is arguably the most shared book by Ellen White—and for good reason, it’s amazing. We also love to give this wonderful book to friends and family, but we’re sometimes hesitant to do so because of the dated design and low production quality found within most editions. We wanted to fix that.

Gift Edition

Are you looking to commemorate a special event or do simply want to give someone an heirloom-quality edition of this incredible book?

The gift edition of Steps to Christ is the same hardcover book included in the complete set, but it comes wrapped in a dust jacket that includes a quote from Steps to Christ positioned between the holographic foil lines on the cover.

When you purchase the gift edition, you will be able to select the quote used on the dust jacket from a range of options, and we will have the option for a custom dust jacket where you can pick your own quote.

Sharing Edition

This paperback version of Steps to Christ is a shareable edition you’ll actually want to share. In fact, we include one of these with every set of The Light and Life Collection for just that reason!

The interior is identical to the hardcover edition and the book still lay flat for easy reading thanks to the innovative OTA Binding technique.

The cover is coated in an ant-scratch coating for durability, and the line work is created using holographic foil.

Editorial Updates

The Light and Life Collection reads in an almost identical way to the original editions and is not a contemporary paraphrase in any sense. The overall editorial intent was to preserve the integrity of the author’s original ideas at all levels, from the chapter level down to the individual words.

A comprehensive list of the editorial changes made across all three books is coming soon.

KJV to NKJV

The New King James Version (NKJV) is quoted in place of most King James Version (KJV) Bible quotations throughout the book series. The KJV is maintained in some instances, such as, for example, when Ellen White highlights a specific word in KJV as the thematic focus of a sentence or paragraph; when the NKJV wording brings a much different word picture or meaning than Ellen White’s use of KJV; and in rare instances where she cites a margin note in KJV that is crucial to her meaning. Ellen White occasionally quotes from the Revised Version (R.V.), and some of these instances have been maintained in the Conflict Beautiful series, mainly where she uses R.V. to gain a particular word in the Bible quotation that does not appear in KJV.

Archaic Words

One of our goals with the Light and Life Collection was to create the best reading experience possible, and this meant updating select words using the following criteria: (1) the word is archaic and unfamiliar to contemporary audiences, and (2) the meaning of the word today is different from its meaning in the nineteenth century.

Examples of word changes that meet both of these criteria are intercourse (changed to “interaction”); aught (“anything”); ass (“donkey”); demoralized (“corrupted”); idiotic (“mentally impaired”); list (“wish”); promiscuous (“indiscriminate”); and without (“outside”).

The Content

As we’ve already said, the books that make up the Light and Life Collection are three of our most favorite books about Jesus and his Teaching. Keep reading to learn a bit more about each one.

Steps to Christ

Steps to Christ is a simple trail guide for a closer journey with God. Practical and succinct, each chapter offers signposts, warnings, and hope for the wandering as well as the wondering. This book maps out a course from the first tentative steps on to deeper knowing and practice, and whether you’re just considering this path or already on it, you will find both encouragement and challenge within these pages.

Thoughts from the Mount of Blessing

You’ve probably heard a sermon or two, maybe some of them were even pretty good, but no one has ever delivered a message like the one Jesus gave on the Mount. This book is an in-depth commentary on the greatest sermon ever preached, a sermon that creates the foundation for Christian morals, ethics, and justice.

Christ’s Object Lessons

Have you ever wondered why Jesus used parables so extensively during ministry? This timeless book begins by answering that question, and then explores the depths of these timeless stories to draw life-changing insights that are as applicable for us today as when the words were originally spoken.

Ellen White

Ellen White was a renowned speaker, reformer, and spiritual leader who dedicated her life to spreading the message of God’s love for humanity. Her thousands of letters, magazine articles and dozens of books make her the most translated non-fiction author in history and led Smithsonian magazine to declare her one of the “100 most significant Americans of all time.”

These writings, stemming from her love for Jesus and compassion for people, continue to inspire readers around the world and are part of her enduring legacy as a minister of the Gospel.
